About the course

This course is specially designed for non-native English speakers working as marketing, creative, or information directors, account managers, and others who simply wish to improve their skills and confidence in English writing. The course assignments and instruction will focus specifically on working and writing across national and cultural borders.

The objective of this course is to give participants the skills to write English texts for a variety of media and for cultures other than their own. The course will provide a framework for understanding the complexities of international communication in an effort to help participants bring their work and their clients’ business or products to target audiences around the world. The course work combines practical writing assignments with readings and case studies.

Course Content

  • Types of writing – biographies, e-mails, memorandums, press releases, presentations, copy, etc.
  • Composition – planning your writing, proofreading, editing, revising and commenting on others' work
  • Style – visual impact, tone of voice, conciseness, clarity, fluidity and readability
  • Language functions – convincing, selling, complaining, resolving, defining, emphasising, paraphrasing, etc.
  • Grammar – passive vs. active voice, punctuation, verb tenses, word order, etc.

Course directors
Naoko Watanabe-Linder, freelance editor and coach to executives for communication in English. With strong cross-cultural experience working in a global law firm, Linklaters in Tokyo and immigration law firm in Washington DC, she has consulted to executives in leading Swedish companies in financial, IT, consulting and marketing industries, as well as government authorities since 2007. 


Naoko, born in Japan, raised and educated in US in Law and Cultural Anthropology, fell in love with the Swedish life-style and has lived in Stockholm since 2006. 

Admission requirements and application

You must have finished high school or equivalent level of education. Your application holds a short description of yourself where you motivate why you're applying to this particular course, as well as a breakdown of your previous education and work experience. Students are expected to have good English writing and reading skills and excellent study habits. Your application must be written in English.
