About Berghs Bachelor

Are you considering pursuing academic studies in media, communications, multimedia or design? Maybe you are wondering whether to study in Sweden or abroad?

As of 2005 students can begin their undergraduate studies at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm and finish their Bachelor’s degree in Australia or USA. A Bachelor’s degree requires three to four years of academic studies. Berghs School of Communication offers two different streams: A Bachelor of Communications and a Bachelor of Design.

The semester at Berghs is conducted in English and all written work must be submitted in English. The courses at Berghs are designed to prepare the students for their studies in Australia or USA. Our instructors come from the industry and have international backgrounds.

During the semester at Berghs students will also be involved in real projects and will be encouraged to attend guest lectures, visit exhibitions and participate in a large variety of events and activities at Berghs connected with students from other programs.

After the semester at Berghs an Official Transcript is issued. The final degree is issued by the partner school attended.

Requirements for admission

To be accepted to Berghs Bachelor you must have a high school (gymnasium) diploma with a Swedish point average of at least 14,0, or the international equivalent thereof. You must also be proficient in English, having achieved a VG in the Swedish high school courses English A and B, or the equivalent thereof. We also recommend that you have some previous work or study experience when you apply, and we appreciate if you have travel experience. You must also submit Berghs Entry Assignment.

Applicants who meet the requirements will be called to a personal interview.

How to apply
If you are an international student we want to receive your application as soon as possible.

Your application should contain:

  • Certified transcripts in English (non-Swedish transcripts should be accompanied by an official evaluation to Swedish standards or an official description)
  • A personal letter in English describing yourself and why you are applying to the Bachelor of Communications program at Berghs and ECU
  • Your Entry Assignment
  • Portfolio of 6-12 work samples with explanations in English (only required when applying for a Bachelor of Design)

Academy of Art University, San Francisco

If you choose to study for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Academy of Art University (AAU) in San Francisco, you will complete your first semester at Berghs School of Communication in Stockholm and then continue on to finish your studies at AAU in San Francisco.

With more than 13,000 students from 80 countries, Academy of Art University is the largest private "Art School" in the US. Founded in 1929, AAU has a long tradition as a professional art school and, since its current president Elisa Stephens took office in 1992, has been a pioneer in integrating IT into the various programs. The motto of AAU is to hire "established professionals to teach future professionals." For example, an animation teacher may work at Pixar Studios, while another may be on the board for Adobe. By combining academic studies with vocational courses AAU is able to ensure that their students are well prepared for their chosen professional career.

  • Length of study: 3,5 years full-time study (1 semester at Berghs, 6 semesters at Academy of Art University, San Francisco)
  • Semesters at AAU run from January to the end of May and from August until late December
  • Course Fee for AAU: between about USD 10 360 and 12 580 per semester depending on how many credits you get from AAU for your previous studies.There will be additional costs for enrolement and study materials etc.

Edith Cowan University, Perth

If you choose the Bachelor of Communications/Creative Industries program with Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, you will finish the program’s first term at Berghs and then travel to Australia to complete your remaining five terms at ECU.

During your first term at ECU you will choose one of the following majors for your remaining four terms:

Edith Cowan University in Perth on the Australian west coast was established in 1902 and is one of Australia’s oldest universities. With its 23,000 students it is the largest university in Western Australia. More than 3000 international students from over 80 countries are enrolled at ECU ensuring a culturally diverse and dynamic student population.

The Bachelor of Communications program is located at Mount Lawley, a beautiful and modern campus near central Perth. The Bachelor of Communications program is a part of the Faculty of Education and Arts, which also includes the School of Communications and Arts, the School of Education, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) ans the Centre for Indigenous Australien Education and Research. The Faculty of Education and Arts is a highly favoured faculty within the university bringing together the creative, scholarly and research skills of dancers, vocalists, actors, theatre performers and producers, musicians, artists, multimedia designers, photographers, film-makers, writers, journalists, advertisers, arts managers and public relations practitioners.

Billy Blue College of Design Sydney

If you choose the Bachelor of Design program with Billy Blue College of Design,  Sydney, you will finish the program’s first term at Berghs and then travel to Australia to complete your remaining five terms at Billy Blue.

During your term at Berghs you are encouraged to attend guest lectures, visit exhibitions and participate in a large variety of events and activities at the school connected with other programs. An important advantage to completing your first semester at Berghs is that you and your Swedish classmates will be able to thoroughly prepare yourselves for your studies in Australia.

Billy Blue was founded in 1987 by the design and communications agency Billy Blue Creative. The agency’s founder Ross Renwick won many prestigious national and international awards within the fields of advertising and communication. During its first year the school had twelve students; today Billy Blue is one of Australia’s leading schools of design with close to 750 students. Billy Blue is located in North Sydney, a few miles from the downtown area, which can easily be reached by bus or train. Unless, of course, you prefer a leisurely stroll across the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Specific requirements for admission
In addition to the standard requirements for Berghs Bachelor you must include in your application a portfolio consisting of 6-12 samples of your previous work, for example drawings, photographs, paintings or graphic designs. You must also describe in English your creative process from idea to finished product. It is important that the work you submit displays evidence of creative thinking and great personal commitment. You may submit your portfolio as a pdf file by email or cd, or as a link.

Don't forget to put your contact details in the protfolio. Your portfolio will be submitted to Billy Blue for assessment.
