Qualifications

  • Johan is the first Scandinavian photographer to participate in Red Bull´s internship at their head office in Salzburg, Austria, and become their first licensed photographer in Scandinavia.
  • That same year he made it to semifinal in Red Bull Illume, somewhere between 51-150 place of almost 26 000 participating pictures.
  • In 2009 he won the Nine Knights competition with best picture .
  • FOTO magazine, Sweden´s most respected journal about photography, published the cover and main article about Johan in December 2010.
  • In 2009 only at age 24 he released he´s first book, Adrenalina collection of he´s best actionsport pictures during the last years, with profiles like Jon Olsson and Lisa Miskovsky telling their stories.
  • Adrenalin is also represented at Fotografiska, Europe's largest gathering point for photography, together with profiles like Annie Leibovitz, Albert Watson and Lennart Nilsson.

During my career I have been working mainly with actionsports, both summer and winter. Skiing and downhill biking is what have been my main targets in front of my camera. During later years I have more and more discovered portraits and lifestyle pictures.

I’m very proud to have been able to have fun and doing what I love, and at the same time building a career out of it. To be able to travel around the world with my friends and my camera, from France to Japan, Indonesia to Ireland, Sweden to Amsterdam and many more.

Some time has gone here in Perth. We have found a nice apartment in a part of town called Northbridge, or “Chinatown” as Rasmus like to call it (We have lots of Asian restaurants and stores here).

Joakim and Rasmus have finally made their way here, and we have shown them around Perth.

Today we took a bus trip one of the other beaches here, called Scarborough Beach. Wished for some surfers, but not waves to talk about today, so no one as far as the eye could see unfortunately.

Posting some snapshots from today, and yesterday night outside our apartment.

Our apartment building

First update form Perth! And YES it is spelled with an H. Have been missing that letter on the last updates (blaming the jet lag!).

I’m throwing up a bunch of pictures for you!

Haven’t seen that much of the city yet, but it’s a nice “little” city. The mixture of old buildings and then the house next to it is a skyscraper is very surrealistic.

The weather is very hot, even if it´s cloudy outside. Believe I will ignite my self when there is blue skies and sun outside…

Today we were at the university, ECU, and made our enrolments for semester 1 and 2. This is going to be very nice, looking forward to start the Film & Video courses. I´ll be skipping the first courses of Photomedia due my experience as a photographer, so I´m doing some journalism courses instead.

I´ll leave you all with the images, and will write more soon!

Cheers from Australia!

Johan

Really looking forward to meeting up with Greta and Siri, who is going to be my future roommates for the upcoming first days in Pert.

Sharing some snapshots from London, to tired to take some photos here in Hong Kong. Some snaps from my iPhone is coming up later on!

Arlanda airport

Arlanda airport

Arlanda airport

So, right now as I write this, im sitting at Arlanda airport in Stockholm, Sweden. Im waiting for my friends Daniela and Isabella to arrive in a couple of hours. Today we have a major change in our lifes. Today we are moving to Perth, Australia.

For the last six months we have been studying at Berghs School of Communication, one of the best in the world. We all (all 31 of us in the Bachelor class) have been studying a more overview looking semester of the communication industry. And now, we all are going to become specialist in our selected subjects. We are eight people who are going to Perth, five is going to Sidney, were three were form the Billy Blue university, taking a semester with us in Stockholm. And the rest of the class is going to San Francisco, with two exceptions for London and Chicago.

Now all of us have 2,5 and 3-3,5 years ahead of us in different universitiesaround the globe.

Myself is going to have studied two programs in the end, and some extra courses. I’m going to work more on my photography. There is so much you can learn and work with in the subject. Everything from shooting fashion in a studio with super advanced equipment and sophisticated light setups, to work in war-affected countries with just a small and reliable camera to take your pictures with. To learn and work even more with the way you interact and work with the person your portraying, Can you really capture he/she’s personality?

I´m also going for something totally new for me (almost), film. I have never filmed before, or worked in an editing program. But I believe I can be good at it. I have my career and experience in photography behind me, which I hope is going to be helpful. I know imagery and how do it good. Now it’s a new challenge in storytelling and how to work with not just one image at the time. I´m really looking forward to this course to see what it has to offer for me.

And at last, I´m improving my writing skills (and English grammar) with some journalism courses. I have always loved to write, but never got a hold of it as I want to. I have been writing photography and flash tutorials before, and lots of articles and editorial texts, but not as good as I would like to. So to top it all, the journalism courses are going to be a killer!

I think we all are going to have a blast down there, and all the others in San Francisco. And I´m sure of that I will meet some of them in the future during work!

Im also thinking of my time in Åre, Sweden, and how that has affected me as a photographer, but more of that in the future.

Take care all of you, and to all my friends and family, I will miss you unbelievably much. Right now we have about 24 hours more or less of flying ahead of us!

Cheers

Johan

Getty Images Partners with the International Committee of the Red Cross to launch its new ‘Healthcare in Danger’ Campaign ’
Award-winning Reportage photographer Tom Stoddart, shoots new ‘Healthcare in Danger’ campaign and sponsorship of new TEDx event ignite partnership

LONDON, 29th November, 2011 -
Getty Images is pleased to announce that it is partnering with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). As part of the agreement, Reportage by Getty Images sponsored the ICRC’s TEDx event, TEDxRC², which took place in Geneva and across the globe, via webcast, on Sunday 27th November.  As part of the partnership, award-winning Reportage photographer Tom Stoddart has shot the organisation’s recent ICRC campaign, ‘Healthcare in Danger’. The initiative aims to address the widespread and severe impact of illegal and forceful acts that obstruct the delivery of sound health care in armed conflicts and other situations of violence.

The print campaign launched in August, 2011 and can be seen across multiple platforms, including print and public transport. Getty Images will continue to support the ICRC over the next two years by producing a body of work from its Reportage photographers which will be published in magazines around the world, viewable across digital platforms from Tumblr to Ipad Apps and will culminate in a touring exhibition.

Nick Evans-Lombe, Chief Operating Officer, Getty Images said: “We are delighted to partner with the ICRC for its ‘Healthcare in Danger’ campaign and beyond. Through the images that Tom shot for the print campaign, to our involvement in the TEDx event, we hope to help raise awareness and highlight the importantissues faced in war-torn communities.”

‘Multiplying the power of humanity’  was the theme of the International Committee of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement’s first-ever TEDx event, called TEDxRC². It lasted for two hours and focused on innovative and thought-provoking ideas for tackling the world’s toughest humanitarian challenges.

Sponsored by a number of global brands including Reportage by Getty Images, the event featured seven speakers, including Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, with around 700 invitees attending.

At the cocktail party following the event, a giant 10 x 6 meter screen presented stunning  award winning  images from the Reportage photographers including a  very powerful selection from The Arab Spring.

“Violence against health-care facilities and personnel must end. It’s a matter of life and death,” said Yves Daccord, the director-general of the ICRC. “The human cost is staggering: civilians and fighters often die from their injuries simply because they are prevented from receiving timely medical assistance.”

“Addressing the issue effectively will require humanitarian dialogue, respect for the law and the adoption of appropriate measures by States, armed forces and non-State actors,” said Mr Daccord. “The ICRC is committed to working with all concerned in order to secure effective and impartial health care.  Deliberate assaults on health-care personnel, facilities and transports, as well as on the wounded and sick, violate international law. The Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols set out the right of the wounded and sick – combatants and civilians alike – to be respected and protected during armed conflict and to receive timely medical treatment.”

I had been waiting for two weeks to get a time in the studio in school. I had another session booked, and in mind, but unfortunately that one didn’t happend. So I asked my classmate Frida if she wanted to help me out a bit. Thinks the session lasted for around 40 minutes, due lack of time during other projects. But this is one shot we came up with!

Report From World Press Photo Masterclass

Once a year, 12 young photographers are chosen to attend the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass, where they are paired with 6 industry professionals for an intense week of critiques, discussions, and portfolio reviews.  Our own Antonio Bolfo, Sebastian Liste, Kitra Cahana, and Alinka Echeverria attended this year’s class.

It was a transformative experience, as related by Bolfo:

“The World Press Photo’s Joop Swart Masterclass was, by all accounts, an amazing week.  I was not sure what to expect, and was immediately surprised by the high caliber operation that World Press was running.  Another thing I noticed right off the bat was the sincerity and humility that all the students had.  This fostered an open learning environment that allowed us to be honest with ourselves and with each other.  Everyone took away something different from their week in Amsterdam, and for me the week was about re-learning who I was as an artist and photographer.  I learned the importance of personalizing my work, of interpreting the people and stories that I try to be a part of.  I understand that for me it is not good enough to compose an aesthetically good photo, I need to digest what it is I am seeing and express that which I am feeling.  It was an invaluable experience, one that I can honestly say changed the way I see and feel.  I am forever in debt to Aidan Sullivan, Alison Morley, and Michele McNally for nominating me and the World Press Photo judges for selecting me for this year’s masterclass.”

Prior to the class each student prepared a photo essay around the topic of Respect.  A selection of their images is above (and some images from the class), please see a larger edit from all of the students here.

Krav - Taking back the taste!

Found an AD I did for KRAV. Just a small resolution one. Not the kind of portraits I use to shoot, but it was fun! What do you think?

Sofia, amazing talent in my class! Just stunning drawings!

Frida on the cover

Changed the image for the frontside of the website. I decided to put Frida´s 3D image. Getting a lot of attention and buzz about it! What do you think?

Soon on the the Facebook page I will launch a competition, were you can win a signed ex of Adrenalin!

Product shoot for the new book!

Just finished up the last pictures for the up coming book. Made some product pictures for it, that turned out well. My co-writher Kristofer was there as an assistant and stylist and our friend Henrik Utter [Otter] was also there as entertainment. Got good feelings about this one. It is not even finished yet, but close to catch up with Adrenalin in sales.

Making charity AD´s for Save the children

Got an assignment in my copywriting class to make an AD for a charity.

I did choose Save the children. And my idea was “What is your reality”. To use everyday situations in our life here in Sweden, and to use a similar picture showing exposed children in the same situation. And as usual my visual cravings took the over hand instead of the text…

My first Ad.

And the second one.

As you see I am NOT a designer at all. I just have the ideas in my head, and trying to show them.

Non of those picture is copyrighted to me. It is just for schoolwork.

3D image in Fashion?

Frida, who is on the design part of my class (half is on design and other half is in copywriting). She had a task to create a fashion brand, with a website, hangtags and everything. She asked me to shoot the look book and advertising pictures for it.

Frida has been modeling for some time and wanted to put her self in front of my lens. Her idea and concept was “Embrace”. She had bought silky cloth to wrap around her. Pretty quick, when she told me the concept, was that I wanted to make an 3D image. After some research we executed it after all Frida´s images was taken. It turned out pretty well, going to make a re-make of it to get the 3D effect even more, but it works!

This is how I lightened the photo.

If any one of you have done some 3D images, or have some tips, I would love to se and hear about it!
