Course Content

The course covers the vital essentials of UX design and also delves into areas traditionally overlooked by UX courses, such as research and lean product delivery, both increasingly in demand by employers today. We take it one step further and cover the practical sides of UX design, including career tracking, navigating your organization, and interviewing techniques to land your dream job.

The course challenges you with a series of practical assignments and two main projects. As this part-time course is held over a 12-week period, it can be combined while working a full-time job.

COURSE CONTENTS

01_The UX Process and Design Thinking
Divergent & convergent thinking. Applying a UX process to problem-solving. Feasibility, desirability ,and viability. From wireframe designer to product designer.

02_Empathy and Mastery in User Research
Quantitative and qualitative research methodology  & tools: competitive analysis, user interviews, ethnography. Research synthesis and insights beyond Personas: Journey maps, System Maps & Affinity Maps. Designing research plans and usability tests that work. Recruiting participants & tools for user research.

03_Ideation & Prototyping Techniques
Turning insights into ideas. Creative ideation methods for generating many ideas. Selecting and prioritizing ideas using an idea matrix. Using rapid/paper prototyping methods to make ideas tangible. Achieving success through iteration.

04_Product Strategy Content & Documentation
Building Information Architecture. Content flows that work. Effective writing for UX.

05_Basic Design Principles
Basics of creating visual hierarchy and directing attention. Fundamentals of well-ordered layouts. Picking appropriate colors and typography for your digital products. Designing using a grid. Mid-term project assigned.

06_Using Digital Prototyping and Wireframing Tools – Part 1: Basics
Effective layouts build user-centric applications and websites. Elevating your designs using modern tools of the trade. Introduction and tutorial on how to use Adobe XD and Sketch. Testing your prototypes using InVision and POP.

07_Using Digital Prototyping and Wireframing Tools – Part 2: Responsive & Mobile Design
Where to start responsive designs. Designing for digital multiple formats. Layout and square grid systems. Responsive CSS.

08_Animations & Interaction Design
Designing high-fidelity wireframes. Principles of interaction. Basic page animation and simple screen transitions.

09_Digital Product Management & Delivery
The agile process and working with product development teams. User stories and sprints. Delivery of digital products. Usability and A/B testing.

10_Beyond UX & Change Management
Using UX to drive change in organizations. UX to drive innovation.

11_Final Project & Critique
Review of final projects. Presentation critique. Refinement of work for your portfolio.

12_Career Management, Tracks & Tricks
Types of experience designers & the future of UX. Picking a track or focus area. Interview tricks. Creating winning portfolios and improving your skills.

Ivan Entchevitch is the Executive Creative Director at SET Creative in New York, an agency focusing on experience design. Ivan has worked with leading global companies and brands including Sonos, Cisco, and The New York Times, and his expertise sits at the intersection of brand strategy, advertising, and service design.

 

Who is this course for

You are a young professional with one to five years experience in design, or related fields such as marketing, product management or entrepreneurship. You are either self-taught and wish to learn methodology and techniques, or are just starting out in UX and want to land your first job or internship as a UX designer. 

To complete the course – and all course assignments – you are required to work in either Sketch or Adobe XD. Choose the tool you prefer and plan for a cost between 99–200 USD, depending on your subscription. The software cost  is not included in the course fee. We recommend Sketch, unless you already work in Adobe and are familiar with XD. You will present some of your weekly assignments live and others using recorded video, via applications such as Wistia. Note that you do not need to activate an account before the course start. Your teacher will guide you through your options at the start of the course.
