Build Future Scenarios with AI

Scenarios are not predictions. Visualising a possible future can influence which futures become easier to imagine, discuss and support. Images can also make one future appear more desirable or inevitable while obscuring alternatives. The course therefore focuses on both building and questioning visual futures.

The course begins with a hands-on futures game using prepared cards to map possible developments according to how likely and desirable they appear. This opens up questions around whose perspective defines what is likely or desirable, and what would need to change for different futures to emerge.

Selected developments are then combined into a focused “What if?” scenario and applied to a real project, challenge or decision. The scenario is explored in relation to its potential impact on users, audiences, organisations or markets, including the possibilities, needs and tensions it could create.

The course introduces a practical structure for directing generative image AI through subject, action, environment, composition, light, material, atmosphere and visual reference. The selected future is visualised through three connected perspectives: the wider environment or system, an artefact or touchpoint that provides evidence of that future, and the lived experience of a person affected by it.

The final stage focuses on critically examining the resulting imagery: what it makes attractive, inevitable or invisible; whose perspectives may be missing; and what is grounded in evidence versus speculation. The scenario is then revised against a deliberate constraint or overlooked perspective and a plan is made for applying the method professionally.

The result is a Project Future Board and a repeatable method for using visual futures as a tool for exploring and shaping future directions.

This course is for anyone who wants to become more deliberate about imagining and shaping the future, rather than responding only to what already exists.

It is particularly relevant for designers, creative directors, strategists, educators, innovation leads, founders, and people navigating a professional or organisational transition. You do not need to work in foresight or have prior experience with generative image AI. Bring a personal, professional, product, service, cultural, or organisational question you want to explore. Alternatively, you can work with a scenario provided during the workshop.

To fully participate in this course, you will require a laptop and active subscription to an image AI tool (Gemini, Chatgpt, Midjourney, Runway, Flux or other). This is not included in the course fee.

Do I need any prior knowledge?

Basic familiarity with generative AI is helpful, but no specialist technical knowledge or advanced Midjourney experience is required. Also, familiarity with collaborative whiteboards such as Miro is recommended.
