UX writers design with language for apps, websites, conversational interfaces and other interactive experiences. This short, intensive online course offers an introduction to the craft of writing for interfaces. You’ll learn the principles of UX writing, how to use storytelling skills to write in flows, and how to create voice, tone, and style for digital services. You’ll work with practical examples to apply these skills, and explore ways to collaborate across teams and navigate an industry that’s just beginning to see the value of this essential role.

Week 1:  Introduction to UX writing: overview of the role, principles of UX writing, what it really takes to be a UX writer. Finding resources, setting goals.

Week 2: Understanding your users: research techniques, turning insights into action, learning from your users. User interviewing, conversation mining, finding the language.

Week 3:Creating personality: voice and tone, making and using style guides and other tools, inclusive and ethical practices. Templates and tools to get others on board.

Week 4: Writing components: understanding interfaces, ideating, writing in flows, creating storytelling experiences. Developing your minimum lovable toolkit.

Week 5: The writer on the team: collaborating across competences, evangelizing UX writing in organizations. Creating processes that work. 

Week 6: Feedback and testing: getting the right feedback about the right things, from the right people, at the right time. Testing and measurement.

Week 7: Final project and discussion: presentation of course projects, discussion and critique. 

Week 8: Career and portfolio: finding your path and getting there, showing your work, continuous development. Q&A with industry professionals.

 

Who this course is for:

You have 3+ years of professional experience in copywriting, design, journalism, social media or a combination of these. You’re either the self-taught person responsible for the words in your products and you want to formalize your skills, or you’d like to transition into the promising, growing field of UX writing. You love doing things with words and you’re ready to turn that passion into a set of in-demand design skills.

With her content design studio, Character, she helps clients of all sizes use language to shape products and services. Her professional experience includes documentary production, journalism, content strategy, adult education, and design practice. Jane is a frequent speaker and workshop facilitator at conferences and events around Europe, and she’s completing her doctorate in the archaeology of digital worlds.
