From Setbacks to Social Media Success: Imogen's career journey after studying at Berghs

Imogen graduated from the Advanced Advertising program at Berghs in the spring of 2022 and has since navigated a whirlwind of challenges and opportunities in her career. From relocating across countries to overcoming setbacks and ultimately finding her current role, Imogen shares her journey of resilience and growth and how it is to work as a Creative Social Media Manager.
Hi Imogen! YOU graduated from the Advanced Advertising program in the spring of 2022; what would you say have been the major happenings in your life and/or career since then?
Following my studies at Berghs, I desperately wanted to stay in Sweden but after struggling to find a job and running out of money, I returned to London. So I took my sorry self back to London. After about 18 months, I got made redundant and kicked out of my flat in the same month, so I left London. After 8 months of job hunting and freelancing (and a revitalising 3 weeks in Mexico with an angel I met at Berghs) I found my current role. All of this to say, you’ve got to keep on taking the next most logical step until you find somewhere you can thrive. Starting a new career has been painful, but it was worth it, and the only way is up.
Could you describe a typical day for you at work?
As the Creative Social Media Manager at WARC, my day is filled with meetings, reviewing the reports we produce, and deciding what would make great content. I also write captions and scripts. If I’m in the office, I record videos; if I’m working from home, I edit them. I spend time chatting with smart people about smart ideas, then distill those insights into bite-sized social content. Each day, I’ll spend at least 45 seconds pondering life—and then I'll probably do more editing, writing, and brainstorming with my colleagues in production and design. Right now, we’re deep in planning for Cannes Lions 2025.
What do you find to be most meaningful in your work?
It has to be how everything social media-related goes through me. I strategize, plan, manage projects, film, edit, post, and write captions. It’s incredibly rewarding to have such a strong influence on a brand and to collaborate with so many people to make it happen. While social media may have its evil little ways, I genuinely enjoy the myriad facets of my job.
What is one major thing you gained from your time at Berghs which has been crucial/pivotal in your career?
One of the biggest takeaways from my time at Berghs was learning how to truly sell myself and communicate my value in a competitive industry. Those skills have been crucial in navigating my career, especially when transitioning between roles and facing challenging times. Beyond that, I also formed some lifelong friendships at Berghs.
What is some advice you would share to someone considering PURSUING A CAREER IN THIS INDUSTRY?
Get ready for the grind. Start now by actively networking and speaking to anyone and everyone you can. Start making stuff. It doesn’t stop when you have a job; you must be prepared to fight and work hard for your career!
What’s your best advice for staying creatively fulfilled?
If you’ve got a juicy, quirky, delightful, creative mind, don’t give it all up to your job. Save some fuel in the tank to enrich your soul. Do the artist’s way. Make terrible stuff for your pleasure. Go out and smell the roses.
