This intensive course gives you a fundamental knowledge of sustainability strategy and communication. The course will introduce different approaches to sustainable development and social responsibility and demonstrate how they can be applied in a business context. We will examine key elements of making sustainability a business strategy and work with specific cases; both business strategy and practice will be analyzed and we will look at the communications strategies they foster. Working from a specific brief, the course will enable you to develop the foundation for a strategy that is rooted in existing business practices, will help drive sustainable change and create the basis for honest sustainability communication.

Session 1: Laying the foundation: Sustainable development – models, approaches and principles. What constitutes sustainable development and how does it relate to business and communication?

Session 2: Digging deep: The UN Sustainable Development Goals and Doughnut Economy. How do individual business strategies relate to global efforts?

Session 3: Getting started. Tools and processes for developing a strategy that is rooted in core values. The briefs will be presented as a starting point for the process.

Session 4: Talking the walk: The process of transforming strategy into communication. Here we define the relevant measures and develop value-based targets.

Session 5: Sustainability strategy in action. Exploring cases on companies who have put strategy to use.

Session 6: Setting the tone. How does your company address the issues, who is your audience and what do you say?

Session 7: The full package: Creating the elements of a strategic communications plan.

Session 8: Presenting your case: Individual presentations and feedback.

Key learnings:

  • Principles of sustainable development, social responsibility, and strategy.
  • The use of different approaches such as circular economy, Doughnut Economy, the Natural Step and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Step by step guide to defining a strategy based on values and visions.
  • Approaches to sustainability communications: transparency, technical/functional, emotional and value-based.
  • The demands, frameworks, and pit falls of sustainability communication.
