In a time of rapid technological and societal change, the consequences of innovation are rarely fully examined. Futures are often shaped by implicit assumptions rather than deliberate reflection. Speculative design offers a way to engage with those assumptions more critically—and to shape futures with greater intention.

This course introduces speculative design as a critical, research-driven practice, where design is used to explore alternative future scenarios. Working through a studio-based, practice-based research process, participants will develop “what if?” scenarios and translate them into tangible forms—visual, narrative, or experiential—that make complex futures accessible, discussable, and open to reflection.

By developing speculative proposals, participants surface underlying assumptions, tensions, and possibilities—creating a deeper foundation for innovation and strategic decision-making. Throughout the course, you will develop a speculative project grounded in your professional context, connecting critical inquiry with commercial and strategic realities.

LESSON 1: Research & Speculation – Researching assumptions and developing speculative scenarios

We begin by examining how futures are shaped in the present—through signals, shifts, and often unspoken assumptions. From this, participants develop a series of speculative scenarios that open up critical engagement with alternative futures.

LESSON 2: Materialisation – Prototyping speculative artifacts and narratives

Speculative ideas are translated into tangible forms—artifacts, narratives, or experiences. These proposals are not solutions, but prompts: ways of making possible futures visible and open to interpretation.

LESSON 3:  Discourse & Critical Reflection – Interpreting implications and positioning perspectives

The work becomes a basis for reflection and discussion. Through critique and dialogue, participants surface assumptions, tensions, and consequences—developing a clearer position in relation to their proposals.

LESSON 4: Integration of Insights into Strategy & Innovation – Connecting speculative work to professional practice

In the final phase, insights are brought back into practice. Participants explore how speculative work can inform ongoing projects—introducing new perspectives into innovation and strategic decision-making.

LESSON 5: Communicating Your Vision

Develop strategies for effectively communicating and embedding your future vision within your organization's culture and strategic
processes.

Between classes, you will work on weekly assignments and share feedback with the instructor and your peers in a dedicated digital classroom (Canvas).

This course is designed for professionals who seek to expand their ability to strategically and creatively influence the future direction of their organization or brand. It's specifically valuable for individuals in creative roles and strategic communication such as Lead Designers, Senior Creatives, Strategists and Brand Managers, Innovation Leaders, Product Owners, and Entrepreneurs in general looking for methods to innovate and differentiate.

In this course you will gain the tools to:

  • Spot signals that point toward change — and question where they lead
  • Work with uncertainty instead of trying to resolve it
  • Challenge default assumptions about how things will develop
  • Open up alternative directions, not just optimise the current one
  • Translate futures into ideas, concepts and creative outcomes
  • Build and express visions of what could be — not just what is
  • Make the future tangible through design and storytelling

You will not only explore where things are going.
You will also explore where they could go — and what that means.

The focus is not on following a process. It’s on developing a way of thinking that allows you to move between the probable and the possible — and use that tension to create new ideas.
